Understanding developmental leadership: Leaders, coalitions and change

30 March 2023

This short Briefing Note summarises the four DLP foundational papers: How is leadership understood in different contexts; Where do leaders come from; How do leaders collectively change institutions and How can developmental leadership be supported. It looks at the ideas and concepts underpinning DLP research between 2019 and 2023, what developmental leadership is and what processes it relies upon to make change happen.

The note summarises research on the interplay between leaders and followers, the stages of how collective change happens and how development agencies can support developmental leaders. It makes recommendations for scholarships, training, technical assistance, exchange and learning, financial support, awareness campaigns and supporting an enabling environment.

DLP has been enormously influential in shaping my thinking and teaching about leadership and change. It combines conceptual clarity, with usable tools in areas such as political analysis, and case studies that are invaluable in bringing complex arguments to life.
